The Characters: The Compsons

old-house-web

The novel the Sound and the Fury centers around the Compson family. The Compsons are descended from a proud ancestry that claims governors, generals, and even a  Scottish warrior within the genealogy. Yet despite the powerful history the Compson lineage is constantly fraught with upsets and failures. The Compsons of the past have always been on the run searching for a new life in a new way, and the current incarnation of this family is no exception. The Compson family as depicted in The Sound in the Fury is a family in decline; domestic turmoil tears apart what fragments of family pride remain until it is disintegrated, and all that is Compson—is no more.

Information on the Compson family compiled and created by Heather Nelson, Tracy Johnson, and Jordan Ladikos.
